In the throes of wedding planning, by Jo

My fiancee is indeed Mr. Incredible, just not in a tight lycra outfit.

This week has been a whirlwind of excitement, planning and trying to take time out to still have fun and enjoy being engaged! We have done quite a bit for our wedding so far: we have a venue, the caterer, the DJ and today we climbed a mountain: we met with a photographer, we met with a cake lady, we met with an invitation lady and then I tried on wedding dresses with my bridesmaid, Jeannie. WOW! I have been amazed at Clive's ideas and input - he's not of those of those grooms who plans to rock up on the day, leaving all the planning to me ... his attention to detail and consideration has blown me away and I'm constantly reminded of what a treasure he is . That we will be husband and wife is 98 sleeps is too much to absorb - all I know is that every good and perfect gift comes from Above, and I'm grateful every single day for this man I will marry.

101 days to go

Well, its 101 days to go before Jo and Clive get married. Jo went round to Clive's house last night and they partook in one of their favourite pastimes – braaing a steak.

Clive thought it would be a good idea to post a picture of Jo's Christmas present to him. Before Christmas he had spent much time looking for a SAMSUNG LCD monitor as he works on his computer all day and wants to have a better display. So she surprised him and bought one for him. Not the kind he was looking for though:

Wedding date set

Well, Clive and Jo have set a date for their wedding. The 18th April, 2009. That is 102 days away. That should be enough time to get everything planned - although come to think of it, it doesn't seem like much time at all.

The only downside is that Clive's best man will not be able to make the 18th as his wife is having their first baby. Which is marvelous, but Dave and Sherrin will really be missed.

So Jo is in the throes of much planning. Clive thinks she is amazing. He realizes there is so much to plan and is so grateful she has a bunch of friends and family around her that are helping to plan everything. Clive is also really excited about gearing his house up for companionship – sometimes when a house is occupied by one, things can slide. He just applied for ADSL and a telephone today. He is quite concerned though about cupboard space. Jo may be petit, but she sure has a lot of clothes. Clive fears getting dressed in the spare room every morning.

So now that the date has been formalized and the DJ is available (Eric Rae) as well as the caterer (Jenny Ambler caterer extraordinaire), and of course the venue – Glenridge Church. We just need to finalize the availability of the person who will marry us and a photographer. Those see to be the main make-or-break components.

He popped the question...

On the 3rd January 2009, Clive got down on one knee and asked Jo to marry him. Jo and Clive have been friends for 8 years and have been dating for 5 months. Clive had bought the ring in October and had been carrying it around with him for 3 months before plucking up the courage to ask Jo and start the new adventure called engagement.

This is the ring Clive has been carrying around for months! It is now where it's meant to be.

So this is the brief story of how it happened:

In July 2008, Clive and Jo started spending some more time together. This was risky as they would always cross the gray line of what friendship is and stray into dating territory and then have to take evasive action to prevent anything serious from happening. This would normally just mean time apart. However whilst backpacking in Scotland with a mate later that month, Clive had an epiphany that backpacking with a mate that you cannot cuddle and in a cold climate is really sucky and he decided that something had to be done. On returning from Scotland bearing gifts aplenty, Jo and Clive started dating and really just having a lot of fun! (PS Don't worry, Durban is a warm climate)

In the beginning of October Clive decided that it was time to buy a ring. So he started looking around. About that time the Rand-Dollar started heading south so he had to hurry things along and bought the ring that he had had in mind for many years.

However courage was lacking and it was only on December 23rd that Clive went to see Mr Basson so ask him for Jo's hand. (This all unbeknownst to Jo). Clive had told Mr Basson that he would ask Jo to marry him on the 26th December in Cape Town whilst on holiday with his family. (Probably on Blouberg beach during a sunset stroll) However the 26th came and went. The 27th came and went. So did the 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st, 1st and 2nd. Clive and Jo then drove all the way back to Johannesburg on the 3rd looking out of different windows as he suspects Jo was expecting something to happen in Cape Town and was now miffy that nothing did.

But on the 3rd of January Clive asked Jo to go for a stroll with him in his parents garden and found a bench surrounded by trees and birds and flowers. He got down on one knee, pulled out the ring, and asked Jo to marry him. The next 5 seconds seemed like time stood still. Nothing moved, nothing made a sound... not even Jo. Raising the ring a little to bring it into line with Jo's saucepan eyes and gaping mouth, Clive decided to keep talking. The next moment the clock started again. Jo, with tears, accepted his proposal.
